TIMOTHY J. CLARK is constantly creating. His sketchbook, paints and easel travel with him almost everywhere he goes. Known for his landscapes, portraits, and interior studies in watercolor and oil, his work is represented in the permanent collections of several museums including Maine's Farnsworth Art Museum, the El Paso Museum in Texas, and the Smithsonian/National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.
Clark's recent awards include the William A. Paton Award at the National Academy's 175th Exhibition and the Genevieve Cain Award for Watercolor at the National Arts Club's Members Show in New York City. This fall, his work has been represented in national and international shows including the Art Students League group show at the Salander-O'Reilly Gallery in New York City, the annual group show at the Crescent Gallery in New Orleans, and the Meridian International Center's True Colors exhibit, curated in response to 9/11, which has been seen most recently at the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul, Turkey. The artist's sketchbook of drawings of Ground Zero, created at the still-smoldering site within days of the attack, was acquired by the Museum of the City of New York this fall.
Jean Stern, Director of the Irvine Museum in Southern California and a noted authority on American art, has commented, "Timothy J. Clark, one of the finest artists of this time, is among my favorite painters. With a fidelity to his own artistic vision, he paints in the rich traditions of Sargent and the American Impressionists. His masterful drawing, heightened sense of color and light, and comprehensive compositions testify to decades of dedication as an artist. His sensibilities range from quiet and poetic to vigorous and emotional."
Will Barnet, N.A., has observed, "Woven through Timothy J. Clark's paintings are unique combinations of visual and emotional stimuli....His sense of space, light and composition combine to create graphic tensions which intrigue beyond the beautifully-painted forms of the subjects."
A faculty member at the Art Students League in New York, and a founding faculty member and Professor at Coastline College in Fountain Valley, California, Clark has also taught at the University of Hawaii and the school at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. He maintains studios in Capistrano Beach, California and West Bath, Maine.
